Amadutsu
Amadutsu aims to create sustainable biomaterial accessories from Amadou mushroom leather, which is a material derived from the species Fomes fomentarius. Joanne’s lineage is directly tied to the Romanian region where the last living craftsmen of the legacy of Amadou handicrafts reside. Her business partner, Károly, is one of the remaining craftsmen in the region, and a key proponent of the Amadou craft knowledge. Together, we are drawn to this living material for its traditional craft and animal leather alternative properties. The products are made with care and respect for nature, incorporating natural materials harvested directly from the forest. The craft inherently exists as low-tech, vernacular, and minimally impacting the environment. Representing a dynamic movement between past and future and learning from material heritage to adapt to contemporary challenges, Amadutsu aims to shift perceptions and behaviors around materials. Connected by our shared regional heritage, we are developing this living material for contemporary applications, ensuring its global presence in the future of materials.
